Well, yet another year has come to an end.  Funnily enough, I can't think of anything earth-shattering that happened this year.  Maybe that's a good thing.

After going through my blog posts, here's a summary of 2013 for our family:

January:  First month in my new manager role

February: We ridded ourselves of negativity and hate by cutting certain ties

March: Cruise-a-Palooza 2013

April: Hubster and I celebrated 19 years of marriage; Threepeat turned 6

May: Middleman was confirmed as a Catholic

June: Middleman turned 14 and Boy Oneder turned 17

July: Hubster lost his job

August: I turned 44

September: Grandma turned 65

October: Hubster got a new job

November: Threepeat had several night terrors

December:  I celebrated one year as a manager!!

I hope your 2013 was one to remember and I hope that your 2014 will be your best year yet!

Happy New Year!

Ok, maybe that title is a bit of an overstatement.  But, I have to say that yesterday had a very "end of days" feel to it.

On Saturday night, Southern Ontario was hit with a major ice storm.  I don't know what the official total amount of freezing rain was, but I can tell you that my van, trees and other outdoor objects were coated with no less than one inch of solid ice.

Thousands of trees are down, 250,000 people were without power and many (last check was 90,000) are still without power.

Traffic lights are out, trees strewn across roads and icy, treacherous walking and driving conditions.  I lined up for half an hour to get gas yesterday as many stations were closed due to hydro outages.  Major malls were crippled with no power.  It has been (and continues to be for many people) a nightmare.  Luckily, we were only without power for about 12 hours.  It was FREEZING in our house, even with the gas fireplace lit.  I can't even imagine what it is like for some of my friends, who are still powerless and woke up to houses at 10 degrees Celcius. :( Our home phone is still out and cell service is spotty.

There are thousands of people who will not have power until after Christmas. :(

Here are a few photos:

 Pretty, but devastating

I cut my fingers on the ice while scraping my van :( OUCH!

Before the ice:
 After the ice:
So many trees ripped in half like this one across from my office:

We had a little scare this week.

Middleman has been on and off sick since the beginning of November.  It started with a cold, but turned into what the doctor said may be pneumonia, so we started antibiotics.  They called two days later to say it wasn't pneumonia, so we stopped the meds.  Then he spiked a fever two days later, so back to the doctor and back on antibiotics.  He took the meds for ten days and was better, but still pretty tired and weak.

Fast forward to early this week.  He has been lethargic, weak, tired, feeling nauseous, suffering from headaches daily.  He did a fitness test at school on Tuesday and had to have his teacher sit with him for an hour afterwards because he was so weak.  Then he got a headache.  He came home from school and slept until dinner time.  On Wednesday, he went to school, but called me at 10:30 to say he had a headache.  Luckily, I was working from home, so I drove to the school and gave him Advil.  I told him if it wasn't better in an hour, to call me.  An hour later, he called.  I picked him up and he slept for three hours.  Hubster took him to the doctor on Wednesday night and a blood test was ordered.  On Thursday morning, my Mom drove over to take him to the lab for the test and then dropped him off at school.  He had a slight headache on Thursday.  When he got home from school, he slept for two hours.

This morning, Hubster took him to the doctor for the results.  His bloodwork was all normal and his blood pressure good.  The doctor believes it is a virus.  If he still feels this way in a week, he is to go back.

I can't tell you how freaked out I get when my kids are ill.  I simply can't imagine ever having to deal with something major.  My heart goes out to parents who have, who do and who will.  :(

For now, I will be grateful to all of my friends who prayed for Middleman today.  God heard them and I am so, so thankful for my boy's health. Pin It

Too blessed to be depressed

Christmas time is always bittersweet.

When I was little, my parents made Christmas magical.  No matter how hard times were for them financially, there were always tons of presents under the tree filling the family room.  They went to great lengths to keep the magic alive and I believed in Santa until I was well past 12 years old.  Our extended family all lived in England, so it was just the four of us.  We had some very close friends who we spent time with though and they filled the missing family shoes.

After Dad died, things were different.  Christmas has never been the same.  When Joanne died, the little spark that was left disappeared.  Now, we sort of just go through the motions.  I try to make Christmas special for my boys, but as they get older, it gets harder to get really excited.  Tyler, our Elf on the Shelf has lightened the mood a little.  Threepeat gets such a kick out of finding Tyler every morning...it's very cute.  But this year, it was all I could muster to put up and decorate the tree.  I don't have any wreaths on the doors, no garland up the stairs, no decorations on the fireplace mantle.  I just can't be bothered.

My Christmas shopping is all but done!  I only have stocking stuffers and gift cards left to buy!  I will have Boy Oneder help me with do all the wrapping, which I despise doing!  So at least the shopping stress is gone.

I also realize that although my heart is heavy and I am missing my Dad and sister tremendously, that I am so, so blessed.  I have a wonderful husband and fantastic sons.  I have a warm, beautiful home and food in my belly.  I have a great Mom and mother-in-law and amazing friends.  This is also the first year when I don't have to deal with drama and stress from people who do not deserve to be a part of our lives.  This year, I won't feel sick to my stomach, anticipating the arrival of hateful, negative people on Christmas Day.  That, my friends, is a wonderful thing!  On the nights when I cry myself to sleep, I wake up realizing just how lucky I am in the grand scheme of things.

And so, I am MUCH too blessed to be depressed.

Merry Christmas!  Only 14 more sleeps!  :) Pin It

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Friday night began the Christmas season for me.  My company had its annual Holiday party at the hotel next to our office.  I don't remember having so much fun at a company party.  Ever.  There were tons of amazing prizes (I won a Samsung Galaxy 3 Tab!!!), lots of great food, drinks and an amazing DJ.  I think I sat for a grand total of about 30 minutes all night.  It was just awesome!  I stayed at the hotel, so it was a late night, and I was very sore the next day (my knees and feet were begging for mercy after a long night of dancing and my ears were ringing for the entire weekend).

Yesterday, we put up the Christmas tree at home.  I despise putting that sucker up.  I hate decorating for Christmas *almost* as much as I hate packing it away after Christmas.  I put on Christmas music to try an lighten the mood a bit, but I limp through the whole ordeal, sucking back wine like water.  I hate it.  For the first time since we had Boy Oneder, Hubster and I did it alone.  The older boys were busy doing homework and Threepeat was busy making bracelets with his Rainbow Loom, so it was just the two of us.  Our pre-lit Christmas tree is no longer pre-lit though...only the bottom section lit up, so Hubster ran out to Canadian Tire to get 300 new lights.  We left the dead ones on the tree and will remove them before we pack it away for the season on Epiphany.

Tyler, the Elf, arrived on Sunday morning too!  Threepeat was SO excited to see him!  The Elf Antics have begun!

My Christmas shopping is almost complete!  YIPPEE!!  I love online shopping, simply because I HATE crowds and malls and heat and and and shopping in general!  The boys are done, except for stocking stuffers.  Hubster is done.  My Mom is done. All I need to get now is MIL, stocking stuffers and gift cards for all my nieces.  Beauty.  I will probably pick up something for each of my awesome colleagues too, but they will be easy...bottles of wine rock!

So, the Christmas season is upon us now.  And I have a heck of a lot of wrapping to do.  GAH! Pin It

Night Terrors

Threepeat has had two night terrors in the past week.

He had one quite some time ago, but it wasn't as long and scary as the ones this week.

He "wakes" from a sound sleep, in a complete panic.  He is crying, shaking, sweating and looks WIDE awake.  He hyperventilates and absolutely freaks out, in sheer terror.  And he won't let Hubster and I console him.  If we hug him, he pushes us away and runs around the room, shrieking.

After the first one on Tuesday night, he wouldn't go back to sleep.  Each time he tried, he would wake up with a start, shaking and inconsolably crying and screaming.  We ended up reading him a book, giving him some water and eventually, he went back to sleep, but the sleep for the rest of the night was fitful.  He whimpered and jumped in his sleep all night.  In the morning, we talked about it and he remembered it all, even recounting his horrible dream about swords in his neck.

Last night, he had a shorter one, but just as dramatic.  Shaking, sweating, screaming...it was just awful.  I ended up turning on Treehouse TV and he fell back to sleep after watching "Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs" for about five minutes.  The rest of the night was uneventful.  This morning, Middleman asked me what was wrong with Threepeat last night.  I said, "He had a bad dream" and Threepeat said, "No!  That wasn't last night, it was the night before!"  So clearly, he doesn't remember last night's episode.

Night terrors are awful!  It's so weird and scary that his eyes are wide open and he speaks to us, albeit in a bit of a half-asleep manner, but yet he doesn't seem to recognize us.  And the fact that he can be so coherent and yet not remember it in the morning is so eerie.

I hope that with the measures we are putting into place: earlier bedtime, nice quiet book before bed, no sugar after supper, small snack before bed will ensure that we don't have many more of these horrible nights to deal with.

I'll keep you posted. Pin It

I have a lingering dry cough (it's been three weeks)
Threepeat has a lingering cold (it's been three weeks)
Middleman has suspected pneumonia (we are awaiting x-ray results, but he has already started antibiotics)
The Boy Who Shall Not Be Mentioned has suspected strep throat...heading over to the walk-in this afternoon
Hubster has a dry cough

I'm not sure why it affects me so much because I don't know anyone personally who died at war.  I have great uncles and grandparents who fought in the war, but none of them really wanted to talk about it.  But Remembrance Day is always such an emotional day for me.  I always observe a moment of silence at 11:00, but that silence is usually broken by my quiet sniffles.  The bagpipes get me every time.

I think not only of those who suffered so much, those who ultimately gave their lives, the mothers and fathers of the dead, the children of the dead, the brothers and sisters and husbands and wives of the dead.  And my heart breaks.  I can't imagine the fear that all of them felt...not knowing whether their loved one was alive, suffering, dead...there were no cellphones then to just call and check in.  Some mothers went to their graves not knowing whether their child was alive or dead...just knowing they were MIA.  Horrifying.

So today, I will close my office door at 11:00 and I will watch a Remembrance Day service streamed over my computer.  And I will cry.  And I will pray.  And I will remember...all those I never knew, but owe my freedom to.

Thank you veterans.  Thank you unknown soldiers.  Thank you mothers and fathers, whose children gave their lives for us...for ME.

I will never, ever forget.

Happy Friday!

This has been a very long week.  The funeral on Tuesday really hit me hard and my heart has been heavy all week.

Direct Energy was supposed to come to clean our air ducts on November 1st between 12:00 and 4:00 pm.  I worked from home that day so that I could be there for them.  At 12:10, they called to say their truck broke down and they would have to reschedule.  I was frustrated, but understand, $hit happens.  They rescheduled for yesterday.

I worked from home again in order to be there for between 2:00 and 6:00 for the duct cleaning.  I received a call at 10:00 to say that the truck was in the shop and they would have to reschedule.  In the famous words of  Q107's "The Champ", I LOSE it.  I told them that I had taken two days from work to be home and that rescheduling a second time was unacceptable.  After being on hold for 45 minutes, the woman came back to tell me that there was nothing they could do and the earliest they could come out would be December 11th.  Bear in mind that I hadn't put on my furnace yet this season, in anticipation of having clean ducts before I started it up.  I was not going to wait until December 11th.  I cancelled them, sent a nasty email and called Sears.

What a difference in the level of service!  Sears had an estimator on my street that morning, so he was at my house within the hour to go through the house, look at the furnace and give me a quote.  The quote was much higher than Direct Energy's quote, but he explained what they would do, how they would do it and how it differed from Direct Energy's work.  Now, I am SO glad that Direct Energy didn't show up!  Sears is coming on November 27th to clean all the ducts, service the furnace and the AC system, which he showed me is leaking.  They also promised not to reschedule and to send another truck if the one scheduled for my house breaks down! LOL!

I ended up turning on the furnace yesterday afternoon because it was just so cold.  After a big puff of dust and about ten minutes of stinkiness, the house is warm and I am a happy camper.

This weekend will be spent super-cleaning my house.  Now that Hubster is back at work, we are both out of the house all day, every day and the mess in the house proves it.  So, I talked him into letting me get a cleaning lady every two weeks.  She starts next Friday, so I have to get the house in order for her to get crackin'.  It makes us all laugh that we are cleaning for the cleaning lady, but I want her to spend her time CLEANING, not tidying up clutter, and the house is very cluttered right now.

Middleman and the boy who shall not be named brought home FANTASTIC report cards last night.  Both averaging in the high 80's.  I am SO SO SO proud of them.  They certainly didn't get their brains from me!  Threepeat will bring home his report card next week and based on his work ethic and how he is excelling in math and reading, I expect he will have an awesome report card too!

Work is awesome.  I have amazing employees and colleagues.  Hubster is settling into his job nicely and he likes the people he works with.

I'm feeling really blessed right now.

Happy Friday friends!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Pin It

Another sad reality check.

I had to attend a funeral today.  A funeral for a man taken much too soon.  He was 42 years young.

This man was the father of one of the boys on Middleman's past soccer team.  He had a son, 14 and a daughter, 9.  He had a young, beautiful wife.  And now, he's gone.

His wife was, understandably, beside herself.  So much so that I couldn't stay in the room.  But I still heard her sobs, every few minutes as someone else walked through the receiving line to console her.  It was gut-wrenching.

His son, looking so grown up and handsome in his grey suit, spent most of his time in the lobby as well.  Probably feeling pain that no 14 year old should ever feel.  He was stonefaced...no emotion...not on the outside anyway.  He was surrounded by several of his friends, a few of which were also Middleman's past teammates.  His little sister was not there.  She was left home with a relative, in the safety and oblivion of her home.

Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma took him in less than six months.  We saw him in early July when Middleman's new team played against his old team.  He looked dreadful.  Thin, grey, bald, sick.  We were shocked because we hadn't heard that he was sick.  He was still undergoing major chemotherapy then.

We saw him again in September at soccer tryouts...just over a month ago.  He had regained some of his lost weight, his hair was growing back and he had colour in his face again.  Only one more treatment and he would be done.  I don't know what happened after that.  I received a text message on Friday night from my friend to tell me he had passed away the day before...on Halloween.

He was self-employed.  His wife is a stay-at-home Mom.  I can't imagine the fear she is facing now.  How will she support her young children?  What will she do?  Where will she go?  My heart breaks for her.

And so, once again, I was given a reality check.  Cancer can strike anyone.  At anytime.  Cancer doesn't care if you are male, female, young, old, black, white...it just doesn't care.  Cancer sucks.  BIG time. Pin It

O to the M to the Geeeeeee!

Good grief, I am TIRED.

I am slowly getting over what I self-diagnosed as bronchitis.  Well, originally, I said my final farewells to my dear friend Kate as I was convinced I was dying of lung and stomach cancer.  Kate knows me well, bless her heart.  She knows, that in my mind, I have survived every ailment known to man.  She also knows to just go with it and play along with my nonsense.  I love that about her.  I will be making an appointment for my flu shot very soon because there is NO WAY I want to relive what I have suffered through with the flu over the last two years.

But I am tired.  And I am yuckily overweight.  I looked in the mirror last week and saw a 9-month pregnant woman staring back at me.  It scared me, quite frankly.  My belly should not be so distended.  So I have been watching my calories and drinking lots of water and have cut down drastically on my wine intake.  Hubster and I have been walking about 4 kilometers a day for the past three days.  I am down 3 lbs already.  I hope I can continue on the path to health this time, as the path almost always comes to a dead end.

The boys are all well, enjoying school and all that jazz.

And HUBSTER IS EMPLOYED AGAIN!  YIPPEE!!!!  He started his new job yesterday and the house is a much happier place to be!  I am thrilled for him and hope that he is able to move through the ranks at this fantastic company for years to come!

God has blessed us abundantly and I had no doubt that He would make sure everything was OK.

One last thing...my work phone has been changed from a Blackberry to an Iphone...I still kinda hate it, but I downloaded the BBM App yesterday and all is well in my technological world again. :) Pin It

Tuesday Tips

  • Don't leave your dress shoes out of the closet at the front door when Dudley is in the house...bad, bad idea.  Bye bye shoes.
  • Don't park your car under a tree like this:

Yellow, sticky confetti all over your car is not fun.  Trust me on this one.

  • Don't let your sons bake cake cookies in your oven. The goo that drips into the oven and burns when you next use the oven is not worth it.
  • Never leave a 6 year old child alone with a spray bottle full of water and a little dog.  Dudley didn't want a bath.
  • Don't let your 6 year old play with the Ipad with open access to Vine.  There are videos posted on there that should not be made public. Sigh.
You're welcome.

Monday Drive-By

This weekend was an exciting one for our little Threepeat!  He had his first ever hockey game and he absolutely LOVED it!!

Last weekend was the hockey assessments (they assess the kids' ability to skate and play hockey in the hopes that the teams will be somewhat balanced).  Hubster is an assistant coach on his team.

Saturday was their first practice and then Sunday was his first game.  So stinkin' cute!  He came off the ice, raving about it, especially, I presume, because they won 6-3!  It was just awesome to see my littlest out there enjoying himself!

Sunday was also my Mom's 65th birthday, so she came over for the afternoon and stayed for dinner and cake.  We had missed her so much because she was on a cruise for 12 days and this was the first time we had seen her in over two weeks!!

Someone hurt my feelings over the weekend as well.  She said something that didn't need to be said in order to make herself feel better about a situation and it stung.  I'll never understand why people have to be downright mean.  I'm over it now, but my opinion of her has changed dramatically.

Middleman had soccer tryouts on Saturday in the yucky rain.  We are so pleased with the team he plays for and are pretty sure he will make the team again...thank goodness.

Our dryer has been broken for a week.  The repair guy was finally able to look at it on Saturday and confirmed that the heater is broken...to the tune of $110.00 plus labour.  Sigh.  He has to come back tonight to actually fix it.  Hubster will have mountains of laundry to catch up on since it's been over a week without being able to do it!  The silver lining of him not having a job right now, I guess.  ;)

I have a busy week ahead of me with lots of lots of changes at work.

I hope all of you out there have a super week! Pin It

I won't ever forget

September 11, 2001...a day that will forever be engraved on many thousands of hearts.

Almost everyone remembers exactly where they were, who they were with and what they were doing on that awful day 12 years ago.

The shock...the fear...the disbelief. That day seemed to last forever.  2,996 innocent lives wiped out senselessly.  The ripple effect touching thousands upon thousands of others all over the world.

I was home that day, having just returned from a trip to Las Vegas.  I flew home only hours before the chaos began.  I remember feeling so sick at the thought that it could have been us.

I couldn't stay away from the TV, but having a 2 year old and a 5 year old at home, I had to shield them from the unfolding horror.  I turned to my computer and reached out to my dear online friends through parentsplace.com.  They were such a blessing to me that day and in the days following.

It is such a vivid memory that it seems like it just happened yesterday, but it has been 12 years.

My thoughts and prayers are with every single person affected by this tragedy.  May we never, ever forget the countless heroes who gave everything they had that day...many made the ultimate sacrifice.

God bless you all. Pin It

Grade One.

My goodness, how CUTE are all the kids at Threepeat's school this year.  They implemented a dress code (navy blue pants (skorts are an option for the girls) and either a white or blue collared shirt).  I LOVE it.  They all look so nice out there in the schoolyard!

Middleman was a little nervous this morning, going to high school for the first time, but he looked sharp in his uniform as well.

Another milestone

Today, my Boy Oneder, the one that was a baby in my arms just yesterday, will take his Dad's Jeep and drive himself to work.  It will be the first time he drives alone.  His shift isn't over until at least 11:30, so that means he will be driving home, alone, in the dark, at midnight.

To say I am sick with worry about it is an understatement.

He is the most responsible kid in the world and he is an excellent driver, but something about him sitting at the helm of a one ton metal automobile scares the crap out of me.

I remember losing sleep over the littlest illnesses when he was a baby.  I remember freaking out about his first day at school, his first time out with friends alone, his first day of high school, the first time he drove our cars with us in the passenger seat.  But this...this takes the cake of worry.  I trust him 100%, but I worry for his safety.

Home Improvement

Hubster and I have been seriously considering moving homes. We've gone through many model homes at several different sites and have fallen in love a couple of times. There were some really beautiful homes with many upgrades included in the price, but alas, the price was too high. :( So, we got to thinking about renovating our existing home. It will still cost a heck of a lot of money to do all that we would like to do, but we can do it on our terms, on our schedule and on our budget. We went to Lowe's and Home Depot yesterday to start looking...our first project looks like it will be doors and floors. I can't believe the choices out there. Wow. There are so many things to consider and SO much planning to do. It's exciting and overwhelming all at the same time! Here's our "Honey Do" list:
New inserts for our front doors (with built in mini-blinds between the glass) and all glass storm doors with interchangable screen for the summer; Replace old sliders in kitchen with french doors (with built in mini-blinds between the glass); Replace old blinds with shutters in the kitchen; Replace old blinds with curtains in the living/dining room; Replace old cheap curtains in family room with new curtains; Remove stiple ceiling in living/dining room and family room and paint ceiling once smooth; Replace old parquet flooring in living/dining room and family room with hardwood; Replace old tiling throughout the main floor with new tile; Either reface or replace kitchen cupboards and replace formica countertops with granite; Redo staircase with stain to match new hardwood; Hardwood flooring in bedrooms and upstairs hallway; Completely re-do ensuite in the master bedroom (it has many cracked tiles and leaks and the layout is absolutely terrible); Paint entire house.
So, as you can see, we have A LOT of work to do. But I am looking forward to it! Much of the work will be contracted out. Hubster and the older boys can do all the demolition, but we will have a professional do the new work. Pin It

Manic Monday!

Busy busy day, so it will be a drive-by on this Manic Monday! - MIL had to be taken to the hospital on Saturday. She called Hubster in a lot of pain, asking him to take her in because she couldn't move. He took her to the local hospital and stayed with her for over five hours. She was diagnosed with a 2 mm kidney stone and sent home with Oxycontin and anti-inflammatory meds. She slept over at our house and was feeling better Sunday afternoon, so she is home resting now. Poor thing. - Threepeat had a bout of the stomach flu Saturday night. He woke me up at 2:30 am, moaning in pain and crying that his tummy hurt. A lot of gas, many tears and many hours later, he had diarreah and went back to sleep...an hour later, at 5:40, he woke up to say he was going to throw up. At that point, we were up for the day and he vomitted twice more. He fell asleep again around 7:45 and woke up at 9:30 a new boy. He was perfectly fine for the rest of the weekend. - I made a roast lamb dinner last night. We hadn't had a roast dinner in so long...I loved every single bite. - Middleman started his grade nine preparation course at summer school on Thursday. He has had a ton of homework, but I think he is secretly enjoying it! - Last night, Hubster and I took on a couple of punks at the park. My Mom was walking her dog in the park when they, for no reason, starting shouting verbal abuse at her. They swore at her and said some horrible things. Hubster and I marched over there and gave them what for! They were terrifed...well, one was. He kept apologizing and beggin us to just let them go home. The other one was scared as well, but he tried to hide it with disrepect and arrogance. Hubster was on him like white on rice, right up in his face...I was quite impressed. At the end of the day, I think the litle $hit learned his lesson. He won't be yelling at my mother again. LOL. We shooed them out of the park, threatening to call their parents (Boy Oneder joined us afterwards and told us he knew of one of them). Parents need to teach their children respect. I can unequivocally say that my children would NEVER speak to adults the way they spoke to us and my Mom. Disgusting. Their parents should be ashamed of themselves. - It's going to be a busy week...Middleman's soccer game tonight, Threepeat's karate tomorrow night, Middleman's soccer game Wednesday, Threepeat's karate on Thursday and soccer practice on Friday. GAH! - Have a super week. Pin It

Middleman is quiet, sensitive, easy-going and oh so intelligent.  Everyone always has such amazing things to say about him.  I am so proud to be his Mom.

Manic Monday

A drive-by update...

  • Threepeat has two more days of Senior Kindergarten before school is out for summer;
  • Middleman has four more days of elementary school before he goes off to high school;
  • Boy Oneder finished his last exam today and has completed grade 11...one more year of high school left;
  • My Granny, my only living grandparent, turned 94 last week.  She lives in England, so we spoke to her yesterday to wish her a happy birthday.  I miss her dearly and wish we lived closer;
  • I have fallen completely off the GI Diet wagon.  Dieting in the summer is near impossible.  Hubster and I are still trying to be careful and will get back on that wagon again soon, but for now, we are going to enjoy some summer treats. :);
  • I am slowly learning that not everyone has the same morals, values and level of courtesy as me.  I am learning to once again, lower my expectations so as to avoid hurt.  I was let down several times this weekend by a few friends and it stings.  I, however, will continue to be the best person (and friend) that I can be;
  • It's hotter than hell outside;
  • We are looking at moving houses.  Hubster and I saw some gorgeous homes this weekend.  We are working out our finances to see if a move is doable or whether we are better to renovate this house.  I would like to move, but Hubster is leaning more to renovating.  I'll keep you posted;
  • On Friday, Boy Oneder turns 17;
  • On Saturday, Middleman turns 14;
  • On July 15th, Dudley turns a year;
  • On August 17th, I turn 44;
  • Work is awesome.  I have 15 of the most amazing people working for me.  I got myself a new corner office with a wall of windows and I absolutely love it;
  • Overall, life is good.  I am blessed with an amazing husband and three fantastic boys.  That, my friends, is all that matters.

Five Question Friday!

It's finally here!  FRIDAY!!!

Another busy week is coming to an end!

Middleman's school soccer team won the championship in the local school tourney, UNDEFEATED!  They played like superstars and had a blast with all their friends!  They ended up with a HUGE trophy!  Very well-deserved!

Threepeat graduated from Sernior Kindergarten...sniff, sniff.  Wasn't he just born like yesterday??  Here he is with his diploma and the most awesome teacher EVER:

Next week, Middleman will graduate from grade 8!  Boy Oneder is in the throws of exams and will finish grade 11 on Monday.  Holy moly...time flies.

Being Friday, it's time for Mama M's Five Question Friday!!

Let's roll:

1. Have you ever been robbed and how did you handle it?

Yes.  In 1997 while we were staying temporarily at my in-laws' house while our new house was being finished.  We went out for about an hour and a half and came home to a broken side door and a ransacked house.  They took ALL of our jewellery, which was in my underwear drawer.  My bras and underwear were thrown all over the bedroom...I threw every single piece away...I felt SO violated.  :(  We went through hell with the insurance company and were only able to recoup a small amount compared to what was stolen thanks to riders and rules on how much we could claim.  I was most devastated by the fact that they stole my Nanny B's engagement ring.  It was probably worth $100.00, but in my heart it was worth MILLIONS.  I still cry sometimes about that.  :(  I hope the robbers were caught some time over these years and have paid for their crimes...it's a hideous feeling when you are robbed. :(

2. What do you do at a kids function when Parents don't behave? Meaning they are the ones being impatient and rude.

Usually, I walk away.  BUT....if you are rude and impatient with MY kid....get the heck out....I'll take you down baby!

3. Have you heard of a potty party? Will you/have you had one for your child(ren)?

Potty Party?  Never heard of it, but if it's what I think it is, it's RIDICULOUS.  Is this where you bring your kids to someone's house and they all sit on the potty and pee together?  That is gayer than gay and I certainly don't mean in a homosexual way....the is LAME!  PLEASE....tell me mothers don't really do this!!!

4. How young do you think kids should be when they start taking swim lessons?

I like the idea of having the kids get used to being in the water right from infancy (6 months-ish).  But for actual lessons, where they learn to swim?  Probably at about 3 years old.

5. What makes you happy?

Not a lot.  I am a pretty sad person most of the time...I am always in pursuit of being happy.  I like sun on my face, wine in my glass and music playing while I relax.  Yes, I could say my kids, but everyone says that. ;)   Have a stupendous weekend!  Ours will be quiet.  It's supposed to rain ALL weekend, so I guess my house will be super-clean!! Five Question Friday

It's been a busy week!  Two soccer games for Middleman...both big wins; great things happening at work and we are gearing up for a bouncing summer!

I don't have a lot of time today, so let's get going with Five Question Friday!

1. What do you appreciate most about your children's Dad?

His patience.  It takes A LOT to get him riled.  He is the complete opposite of me...I fly off the handle very quickly.  I am grateful that he can deal with issues in a calm, subdued manner.

2. Do you always wear your seat belt?

Always.  It's the law here and I feel weird if I don't have it on.

3. Do you dream and do you remember them?

I rarely dream and if I do, I will usually only remember it for a short time.  The one recurring dream I have is being in or watching a plane crash.  I hate that dream because I wake up in a panic every time. :(

4. What is one thing you swore you'd never let your kids do before having them, that you have now changed your ways about?

One thing?  Pffft.  There are MANY.  Staying up late; eating in the family room; eating junk food; watching movies that are not really appropriate for their age; sleep in our bed...I could go on, but I won't.  Suffice it to say that I was full of knowledge before I had kids...then I had kids and realized that it's harder than I thought.  I have genuinely good kids, so even though I let them do things I swore I wouldn't, I'm obviously doing SOMETHING right.  ;)

5. If you could be granted one wish, what would it be?

Health and love for my family always.   Have a fantastic weekend! Pin It

Manic Monday!

This weekend went so quickly, although the days were long...does that make sense?

Saturday was clean the house day.  We had a couple of bouncers out and the boys cut the grass while I cleaned indoors.  We had a nice barbequed steak dinner and just kind of hung out.

Sunday started with a soccer practice for Middleman, while Boy Oneder and Hubster picked up the bouncers.  Threepeat had a playdate with his bestie from daycare in the afternoon and Boy Oneder spent the afternoon at the mall with his girlfriend.

Hubster, Middleman and I went over to the local driving range to shoot a few balls.  I was a little nervous about how badly I would do, as I haven't golfed since just before I got pregnant with Threepeat in 2006!  My first shot was a disaster, but from the second shot, I KILLED it.  I hit quite a few 150 yard balls and was very accurate too!  Towards the end of my basket, I was getting tired and sore, so the last few balls weren't very good, but come on...not bad for almost seven years off the course!  Driving the balls did give me the itch to play again though, so I need to get out to a course, and SOON!  I am suffering today though...my arms ACHE!  LOL!

Tonight, Middleman plays soccer against the team he played with last year.  It should be fun to see them again and exciting to see who wins!  Unfortunately, it's raining and it's supposed to continue raining all evening.  :(  Ah well, umbrellas and raincoats it is!

The best news of all is that I have lost 6.5 lbs in ONE WEEK!  Hubster and I both started the Glycemic Index Diet by Rick Gallop.  I haven't been hungry once, I am not deprived of many of my favourite foods, I don't have to count calories and I don't have to do any special preparation...it is the DREAM lifestyle!  I will keep you posted, but my ticker up there under my header will also keep you updated.

Have a great week! Pin It

Friday again! YIPPEE!!

What a week we have had!

Monday was surprisingly uneventful.  Hubster and I started our new lifestyle, using the GI Diet as a means to not only lose weight, but to eat healthily.  I actually LOVE this plan.  I don't have to count calories or look at fat content...I simply eat foods that are on the green list and avoid foods on the yellow and red lists.  Simple.  And the green list is not all bird and rabbit food either!  We've had lasagne, salmon, chicken, lots of veggies and Hubster can even have brown rice!  I highly recommend this plan.  I've already lost 3.5 lbs!  WOO HOO!

Tuesday evening my dear friend, Chantelle, came over for dinner and a nice catch up chat.  I love that girl like a sister.  We had a few laughs and caught up on almost a year's worth of chat!

Wednesday morning at 11:17, I received a call from Threepeat's school...he's sick with a tummy ache.  I head home to pick him up and work from home.  He had some chicken soup and declared, "Mom!  Your chicken soup cured me!  I feel great!"  Sigh.  I contemplated taking him back to school, but he swore he's be quiet and watch TV while I worked.  He really was a good boy, so I gave him a hooky pass...just this once...with a warning that it's bad to fake sick.  He swears he wasn't faking.  LOL

Wednesday night, Middleman was injured at his soccer game...ten minutes into the second half, he went to kick the ball and went down like a tons of bricks.  No idea why, but we now know that his calf muscle seized and cramped into a ball.  He was rolling around in excriutiating pain, while I stood, helpless, on the sidelines.  We all thought he had broken his leg.  After what seemed like an eternity, his coaches carried him off to the sidelines, where he remained, lying down, for the rest of the game.  Thank God for great coaches...he called out to Hubster and gave a thumbs up sign so that we wold at least breathe a little easier.

At the end of the game, Middleman was still unable to stand, let alone walk, so a couple of the fathers carried him to the car.  When we got home, his muscle was still as hard as a rock, in a full spasm!  He was in alot of pain!  I gave him Advil and a hot water bottle and put him to bed.  Hubster took him to the walk-in clinic Thursday morning and they said it might be torn and is definitely strained.  He was told to walk with crutches and not play soccer for at least a week.

Middleman stayed home for the day and I made an appointment with his physiotherapist to have him assessed.  When I got home from work, Middleman was actually walking!  I was so surprised that it had gotten better so quickly!  The physiotherapist did some ultrasound therapy and massage and then taped him up.  We are to go back on Saturday for more treatment and assessment.  She doesn't believe the muscle is torn, which is such a blessing!  Middleman was DEVASTATED to miss the school tryouts for the soccer team and was so scared to be out of soccer altogether for ANY length of time.  It's looking like if all goes well, he will be back on the field on Monday!  (fingers crossed)

This weekend will be a slow and easy one.  Hoping to get some sunshine on my maggot white body too! Pin It

It has been a LOOOOONG week again.  I have missed my Middleman dearly and can't wait to hug and squeeze him to PIECES tonight!!!!  His bus is due to arrive at 7:30....can't WAIT!

Being Friday, it's time for...FIVE QUESTION FRIDAY!  Click the link and visit with Mama M so you can play too!

Here we go!

1. What is an acceptable age for girls to start dating?

Fifteen.  That's how old both Boy Oneder and his lovely Ali were when they started dating.  Anything else is too young...there are so many things to focus on pre-boys and I strongly feel that they should wait until fifteen...my rule applies to boys as well as girls.

2. Do you think your kids should have summer homework?

Yes, absolutely.  But they don't.  I try to make the boys read over the summer, but usually lose the battle. :(

3. Would you prefer to live without AC or heat?

I can answer this question without hesitation...HEAT.  I could never, ever live without AC in the summer.  If I'm cold in the winter, I can cuddle under a blanket.  Funny, we didn't have air conditioning until I was at least 14 or 15....no clue how I lived my childhood without AC. (I shudder to think)

4. What the worst thing about staying in a hotel? (Besides not being with your family)

Rude, loud, obnoxious idiots who slam doors, laugh like hyenas or let their kids run screaming down the halls after midnight.  Ugh...why'd you get me started?  My blood pressure just went up THINKING about this.  GRR!

5. So, do your kids really get "104 days of summer vacation"? (Bonus points for those of you that get this reference!)

Oh how I wish we were like Phineas and Ferb...they have many more days than we do!  Our boys will get a total of 67 days of summer vacation.  :(   Have a fun-filled weekend peeps! Pin It

Sunburned, windburned, blessed

What a weekend!

Middleman had a soccer tournament that began at 9:00 am on Saturday.  Luckily, it was a local tournament, so we didn't have to leave the house until 8:00.

They lost their first game, but not for a lack of trying.  The boys played very well, but this team was a tier above them.  Score : 2-1

The second game was at 11:45...ended in a 1-1 tie.

The third game was at 2:00...1-0 loss.

We were out of the tournament.  The boys played fantastically and should be very proud of the fact that they were able to keep these higher tiered teams to such small losses/a tie.  I was wind and sunburned and to be honest, glad that I would now have Sunday to clean the house and do the mountains of laundry.  After dinner, I was absolutely exhausted and headed to bed at 8:30.

10:13 pm...the phone rings.  The team manager was calling to say that due to our low goals against, we were the wild card and would be playing in the quarter-finals.  The game was at 10:15 am on Sunday.

They won!

The semi-finals were at 12:45...WE WON AGAIN!

The finals were at 3:15.  We lost 3-1...against the same team as we played first on Saturday.

WHAT A DAY!  I am so, so proud of those boys!

My house is s pig sty and the laundry is still piled high.  Middleman heads out to Quebec with his class tomorrow morning at 6:30 am, so I guess tonight is wash, dry, pack night!

Hubster and I are both BADLY sun/windburned (just on our faces thank goodness).  In fact, he is so bad that he is working from home today...he has a racoon mask because he was wearing sunglasses all day...he looks very funny! LOL  The weather was very sunny, but very cold and windy, so we didn't feel the burn until it was much too late.

Ah well, what's a summer without at least one burn, right?

Five Question Friday!

It was a short week here in Canada, and I took an extra day off on Tuesday, but I tell you this week has DRAGGED!  I am excited about Middleman's soccer tournament this weekend!  The weather is supposed to be cool, but sunny...perfect soccer weather!

Being Friday, it's time for Five Question Friday, brought to you by Mama M!  Wanna play?  Head on over to her blog and link up!

Let's go!

1. Do you wake before the alarm or stay in bed until the last possible second?

Unfortunately, my bdy clock is set at 6:30 am.  I alway wake up before the alarm and sadly, I even wake up at this time on weekends.  :(

2. Who should get a baby shower? Is it just the first baby or all babies?

I've always believed that the shower should only be for the first baby and then most of the stuff you get from that shower, if you take good care of it, can be used again for subsequent children.  Then I had Threepeat.  Hubster and I had given away almost everything from the first two boys to friends and charities. Seven years after Middleman was born, I was unexpectedly pregnant and had NOTHING for the new baby.  My amazing friends threw me a shower and I got some of the basics that I really would have had to struggle to purchase on our own.  So, my view on showers has changed slightly.  :)

3. How will you spend Memorial Day?

Working.  :(  Canadda had our long weekend last weekend when we celebrated Queen Victoria's birthday.
4. Do you have a Storm/Hurricane/Tornado/Fire plan for your kids, house..?

Yes...if a storm/hurricane/tornado/fire happens, GET OUT FAST.

5. What is your favorite morning drink?

Tim Horton's coffee...large, one cream, two sugars.   Have a super duper weekend!!!!!!!! Pin It

What a freaking week!

Sunday: Van stalls while I am driving along the road.  Hubster drives it to the dealership while I follow in the Jeep.  We drop the keys in the night box and leave the van overnight.

Monday: I have to work from home as van needs to be fixed.  Late in the day, dealership confirms that van needs new battery.  $286.00.  Part has to be ordered.  Van will be ready tomorrow.

Tuesday: I have to work from home because van won't be ready until 10:00.  11:30, the dealership shuttle picks me up.  Pick up van, head home to work.  4:30, drive dogs to vet for heartworm tests.  Blood tests, meds and a 3 month supply of Rosie's food = $483.00.  Hubster has no idea yet.  He's going to kill me.

Wednesday:  Out of the house by 7:30 to drive to work.  Get 500 yards down the street, van stalls.  In front of two police cars, which were parked to chat to one another.  Try to start van again, won't start.  Panic.  Call Hubster, who is still home.  Tells me to try to start it again...it starts.  Pull a U-turn RIGHT in front of the police cars.  Van stalls again.  Re-start it can get it back to driveway.  Call dealership to leave an angry voicemail.  Email work to say I have to work from home again.  8:30...no call back from dealership.  I have Hubster call.  Dealership will pick up car in an hour.  10:30 - TWO hours later, dealership arrives for van.  Late in the day, I call for update.  It's now the EGR Valve.  $400.00.  They want to keep it overnight so they can test it when it's cold in the morning.

Thursday: I drive Hubster's Jeep to work.  After several check up calls, they finally call back at 3:00 in the afternoon to pick up Hubster to get the van.  I drove the car to the dentist for a filling and it didn't stall.

Friday:  Drove the van to work the long way so as to avoid the highway...took me a full hour.  So far, no problems.  Terrified to drive home on the 407 in case it stalls.

How was YOUR week?

Five Question Friday!

Yippee!!  It's FINALLY Friday!  And it's the day that Sammy Samsung, our brand spanking new dishwasher will arrive!  Praise the Lord!  I certainly have dishpan hands!!

Time for Mama M's Five Question Friday!  If you want to join in, head on over to her blog and link up!

Here we go...

1. What is your next home improvement goal?

Our house is 11 years old...there are plenty of things that are beginning to need replacing...kitchen cupboards, floor tiles, parquay flooring in the family and dining rooms, carpets upstairs, remodeling of our ensuite....the list is endless.  Unfortunately, there is no money in the budget for any home improvements right now, so all those things will have to wait a while.  :(

2. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be? No religious texts (ie Bible, Quran, Torah, etc, etc)...

I can't imagine reading only one book over and over and over again.  I can't choose one.  Once I have read a book once, I am done with it.
3. What is on top of your refrigerator?

Dust.  And LOTS of it.

4. What are your favorite or most used phone apps?

Facebook, Candy Crush, IPeriod

5. What's the one thing you hate most about your spouses job?

Nothing...we work for the same company and it's the best company in the world!

So long Winnie Whirlpool! Thanks for your hard work!

After 11 long years, Winnie Whirlpool, our trusty dishwasher, has finally washed her last dish.

Winnie joined us when we moved into this house.  She was quite expensive...not "top of the line" but up there.  She had an adjustable top rack, lots of wash settings, from china to pots and pans to sanitize.  She was shiny and black and very quiet at her work.

But over the last year or so, she has slowed down.  Her pieces were beginning to erode from many, many hot wash cycles.  Hubster fixed her and replaced a few parts several times, but this past weekend, she broke to a point where Hubster could not save her.

So, yesterday afternoon, Hubster and I headed out to Sears and bought a replacement.  Sammy Samsung will join us this Friday and he can't come soon enough!  I hate seeing Winnie sitting here, useless and sad, waiting for her ride to the dump.  I hate washing dishes by hand even more!  This week will be a paper plate and takeout food week, I think.  ;)

Thanks Winnie....<3> Pin It

Threepeat is SIX!

Six years ago, on April 18th, 2007, at exactly 10:36 am, our little Threepeat came into the world in the usual way.  He weighed 8 lbs, 8 ozs and was simply perfect.

Today, that little schmoopy turns 6.  He is full of love and life.  He loves Skylanders and his "red thing" (a shoe horn he is very attached to - don't ask).  He hates chicken pot pie and homework.  He can ride a two-wheeler and can do pretty much anything he puts his mind to.

Life has been a whirlwind since he joined us and he sure keeps us on our toes.  He completed our family so perfectly and I can't imagine life without my Threepeat.

Happy Birthday Big Boy!
