Deerhurst Weekend

Hubster and I went to Deerhurst Resort with our besties, Kathy and Bruno this weekend for a little R & R and adult time. Here's the story...

Last November, my girl, Karen, and I booked a Girls' Weekend at Deerhurst, where there were tons of fun activities planned for girls only. We were so excited about it. Low and behold, a few days before we were to leave, Middleman came down with the Swine Flu. Then Boy Oneder and Threepeat showed signs that they too would start oinking, so we cancelled the weekend. Deerhurst was kind enough to extend a credit for the entire amount, that was to be used within a year.

Fast forward to July and I realized that my deadline was approaching on the credit. I decided, with Karen's blessing, to use the credit for a weekend with my Hubster and that we would do another girl's weekend another time, hopefully at Deerhurst in November. Hubster and I invited our besties to come with us and we picked a weekend...September 11th. I called to reserve in the beginning of August and was sad to find that the only weekend we could arrange was sold out for an Ironman triathalon thingy-ma-bob. We went back to the calendar and with a bit of rearranging, were able to do this past weekend. When I called Deerhurst and booked the weekend, I was shocked to hear that the cost of one night in a two-bedroom condo was the same as the full girls' weekend last year! I hemmed and hawed and finally decided that we work really hard, we NEVER go on dates or have any alone time and it was money spent last year...what the hell...and I booked it. We deserved to live in luxury, if for only one night. Kathy and Bruno paid for tickets to the Decades show that has been running throughout the summer and we were really exicted because the show looked great!

We arrived at Deerhurst at 3:00, although check-in wasn't until 4:00, but hoped to get lucky with an early check-in. The show started at 8:00, but the seating was first come, first served, so we figured if we could get in early, we'd have more time for showers and dinner. After a 15 minute wait in line for the front desk, we were advised that our room wasn't ready and the clerk took my cell number, promising to call as soon as it was ready. It was now 3:15. We headed down to the lakefront for a bit, watched the kids frolicking in the waterplay area and watched a beautiful bride have her photos taken. At 4:15, we still hadn't heard from the front desk, so we went back to the main pavillion to get an update. We stood in line at the front desk for another 10 minutes and at 4:30, we were told that they had had some trouble with our room last night and that the maintenance/housekeeping staff were still working on the room. The clerk called the room and spoke to one of the housekeeping staff, who told him that they would be another hour to hour and a half. This, if you are still with me here, would have brought us to between 5:30 and 6:00. We had four adults, all needing to shower and change and eat dinner, which we had planned to have in a little restaurant in Huntsville...there was no way we would make it in time for the show at 7:30.

We told the clerk our dilemma and he went to the back office to speak to his manager. After about 5 minutes, he returned, offering us a smaller room to shower in and when our room was ready, we could pack up again and a shuttle would take us to our condo. All four of us agreed that this was not a suitable solution. To unpack and repack everything is not what we had bargained for when we booked our $560.00 per night room. Oh yes folks...$560.00.

Kathy and I stepped outside while Hubster and Bruno spoke with the clerk and his manager. The manager offered us two smaller rooms, in the Sports Villas instead of our 2 bedroom condo. The Sports Villas are on the other side of the resort, away from the beautiful view of the lake. There was one bedroom and one pullout couch. At this point, we realized that there was no way we were going to get the room that we booked and we told them we would take one room. We were going to be spending all of our time together and the whole point of getting a 2 bedroom condo was so that we could be together! The manager was very apologetic and gave us 4 complimentary drinks. We were told that we could use the balance of the credit on any other services at the resort, and because it was now 4:45, so we knew we had no time to get to Huntsville and decided we would have to use the credit at Eclipse, Deerhurst's restaurant.

We drove over to the Sports Villas and carried our stuff up to the room. The room was clean, just as it had been the last time I stayed at Deerhurst. I went to use the washroom and the toilet wouldn't flush. Half an hour later, the plumber arrived to fix the toilet. It's now 5:25. We realized that we wouldn't have time to shower and eat a relaxing dinner, so I had to call the front desk to cancel our show tickets. We were all pretty bummed out because we were all looking forward to that show. :o(

We decided to have a couple of drinks and play "Wahooey", Kath and Bru's homemade board game. That, as always was fun.

After we showered and changed, we headed down to the restaurant for dinner...it was about 7:45. The restaurant was MUCH more money than we would have spent at the restaurant we were going to go to in Huntsville ($36.99 per person for a buffet), but we needed to use the credit and where the heck ELSE would we use it, but in the restaurant?

After our dinner, we headed back to the room for some more Wahooey. We went to bed around midnight and after ten minutes on the pullout couch, it was not going to happen. We ended up sharing the bedroom with Kath and Bru. Thank goodness they are like family...how uncomfortable if we weren't as close to them as we are.

We checked out at 11:45...again, waited in line for 15 minutes to do so. We couldn't use the express checkout because we had to settle up with the credit that was remaining.

So, although the company was fantastic (love you Kathy and Bruno), the weekend really was a disappointment. Like I said, Hubster and I NEVER get away and we really were looking forward to a relaxing, luxurious weekend at a high end resort. I think we would have been better off staying at a Holiday Inn closer to home! At least we would have had time to do all the things we wanted to do!

I left my comment card in the Express Checkout Box when we left. This morning, I received a DM on Twitter, asking for my surname and promising to look into the situtation. I sincerely hope that someone gets back to me. I hope this was a one-off thing, because I would REALLY like to go to the girls' weekend in November, but if this past weekend is what I can expect in November, I'll find another place to go. I'm so sad that what I thought would be fantastic was inconvenient, disappointing and nothing really special. :o( Pin It
